Leroy G. Pape, Sr., age 85 of Seguin, passed away on August 31, 2010. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Assembly of God with Pastor Don Wiehe officiating. Military Honors will be under the auspices of American Legion H. U. Wood Post #245. Leroy was born on August 13, 1925 in Guadalupe County to John Charles and Edna Ann Hester Pape. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the owner of Pape Flooring. His wife LaMeriel Pape, son Steven Pape, parents, siblings, Raymond Pape, John Pape, Virginia Pape, Rosa Lee Perkins and Ruby May McFeron preceded him in death. Survivors include his sons Leroy G. (Butch) Pape, Jr., Donald Gene Pape and Ronald Dean Pape; grandchildren, Shannon Pape, Kasee Anise Pape, Ashley Marie Pape, Christine Howard, Aaron Pape and Jared Pape; three great-grandchildren; sister, Dot Henderson and husband Ted; sister-in-law, Beth Pape; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Laura Leissner Carlson, age 46 of Seguin, passed away on September 2, 2010. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeremy Roy officiating. A reception will follow in the St. James Catholic Church Parish Hall. Laura was born on March 23, 1964 in Los Gatos, California to James Calhoun and Joyce Theresa Bonaventure Leissner. Laura graduated from Seguin High School in 1982 and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1985. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother to Violet. She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Ouida and Martin Leissner and Beulah and Threz Bonaventure. Henry Strey, Jr., age 88, passed away on September 2, 2010, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 6, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer United Church of Christ in Zuehl with Rev. Lee Zillman officiating. Interment will follow in the Redeemer United Church of Christ Cemetery in Zuehl. Henry was born on November 30, 1921, on the family farm in La Vernia to Henry and Anna Duelm Strey . He was a lifelong farmer and retired after 30 years as a shipping clerk from Federal Envelope Company. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Virginia Voges Strey; son, Marshall Strey and wife Barbara; daughters, Sharon Schaefer and husband Ronald and Shirley Winkelman and husband Gerald; 7 grandchildren, Scott Schaefer and wife Amber, Jason Schaefer and wife Erin, and Steven Schaefer and wife Holly, Brent Winkelman, Sarah Johnson and husband Leonard, Ashley and Allyson Strey; 5 great-grandchildren, Arthur Reed Winkelman, Olivia and Aiden Johnson, Logan and Luke Schaefer; brother, Melvin Strey and wife Joy; sister, Gertrude Huth and husband Marvin; sister-in-law, Aileen Wussow; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Al G Herrin passed away peacefully on September 3, 2010, at the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin, Texas, after a lengthy illness. Born in Rocky, Oklahoma on November 24, 1921, he was predeceased by his parents, Walter & Leona Herrin and his younger brother, Neal Herrin, who were longtime residents of Lubbock and Anton, Texas, respectively. He is survived by his life-long companion and wife of 66 years, Emmagene McGowen Herrin, who was his sweetheart since they met in 1929 when he moved to Anton as a second grader; his daughter, Gene Ann Herrin, and long-time friend, Barry Duncan, all of Seguin, Texas; niece, Ricki McMillan and husband Butch McMillan of Levelland, nephew, Randy Herrin and wife Cathy, of Anton, and niece, Nancy Moore and husband Steve, of Anton, cousins Chloe Herrin Wells of Lubbock, Wayne Boone of Lubbock, Paul Boone of Lawton, Oklahoma and Margie Fuller of Lawton Oklahoma as well as dogs Buddy, Allie and Bebe who loved him dearly. Herrin graduated from Anton High School in 1939, and attended Texas Technological College before being sworn into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He attended basic training at Shepherd Field in Wichita Falls, Texas and spent the first year of his service in training as a flight engineer and building aircraft for the World War II effort. In January, 1945, his crew ferried a B-17 bomber to England, where he was stationed at Snetterton-Heath, North of London. With Herrin, Technical Sergeant, as the top turret gunner, his crew flew 22 missions over Germany in the “Arkansas Rambler” B-17, and on its last mission on April 3, 1945, was hit by German shrapnel and although having lost two engines, made an emergency landing in Sweden, where they were detained until the war ended. Herrin was engaged in cotton farming and ranching near Anton, Texas and Gene Autry, Oklahoma from 1946 until he retired in 1986, and he and Gene resided in Anton until moving to Seguin in 2000. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Anton, the Anton Lions Club, serving as its President, and had a great love of the outdoors, enjoying many years of rv-ing, camping, fishing, hunting and golfing. The family gratefully acknowledges the exceptional care he received from Dr. Gustavo Gross and the nursing staff at GRMC during his final illness, and from Dr. Thomas Raetzsch over his last years, as well as the loving care of his faithful caregivers, Elsa Ricarte, Pam Leal, Peggy Hanover and Mary Alice Ibarra. A memorial service is planned for a later date in September at the First Methodist Church in Anton, Texas, where he will be interred. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Owen Project, a project to bring laptop computers to rural school children in Honduras c/o St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 201 E.
