Guadalupe County Junior Miss on Broadway, if you had been there with me you would have such great hope and promise for the future of our young women.
Junior Miss is an opportunity for High School Juniors to participate in a Scholarship Program that encourages young women’s beauty from within.
I took my place in the sound booth with Ryan Anderson, he is just the best, my 2nd year to join him for the Junior Miss Program.
Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” kicked off and 13 fresh faced young women took to the stage dancing in their opening number, this was just the beginning of the show to follow full of glitz and glam.
Red satin cape and a Phantom of the Opera half mask the stage is dominated by none other than Mike Andrews, quick witted and fast tongue in cheek, Mike is the champion of Emcee’s.
Mike let the audience know up front that poise, scholastics, fitness, talent and expression was for our future 2010-2011 Junior Miss the winning keys.
2009-2010 Junior Miss Winner Brooklyn Eikenburg took her place beside Mike to help usher in her deserving successor.
Brooklyn represented Guadalupe County proudly by winning 1st runner up at The Texas Junior Miss, she has such an outstanding presence as well as talent galore.
The show begins, follow me as I share a little about each contestant, the contestant order 1 - 13.
Nhu-Nguyen, she is a mere slip of a young women, yet came out fighting to “Eye of The Tiger”, she has had her black belt since she was 11, her formal an elegant satin in sea blue green.
Nhu’s sponsor The Koehler Company would be as proud as her parents Hoa Tran and Minh Tran were when asked her legacy to leave, her thoughtfulness and how much she cares for her friends.
Seguin High School Junior, Jessica Fielder, The Elks Lodge #1229 her sponsor, played Bach on the baby grand, her performance spell binding, I didn’t want it to end.
David and Kristi Fielder, would probably concur with their daughter Jessica’s legacy to make people laugh and liven up situations when things get tense.
Jessica’s dress was royal blue, jeweled empire halter, all the girls are lovely, I am feeling the suspense.
Yliana Lara was a girl after my own heart as she performed a poem, “Sick” by Shel Silverstein.
Yellow robe, clutching a teddy bear, can’t you just imagine that her family Diana and Luz Leo and Jesse Lara how proud they were when she acted out her character’s “I am sick whine”.
Yliana’s sponsors, Dream on Mattress and Luis and Erika Collazo probably already know her legacy that she stands for what she believes in...
Yliana was pastel pink perfection in her feminine formal, topped off with an impish grin.
Navarro Junior Kinnan Dailey showed off her graceful side in a color guard routine with “Glitter in the Air” by Pink.
Parents Rick and Stacee John Dailey (yes, that’s my girl!), her formal black and moss green strapless brocade, as I watched my youngest on stage a tear back I did blink.
Karen McMillan REALTORS® (I am proud to be a Realtor there) and Tooth Time Family Dentistry sponsored Kinnan, and will be happy to know her legacy will be to help save the environment, in her future of course.
Carly Colville’s talent playing the flute “My Heart Will Go On”, Carly has always had a passion for music, it is one of her driving forces.
Carly’s parents, Dr. Clark Colville and Margie Colville must have beamed with pride as she glided across the stage in her cream colored vintage ball gown.
“Honesty, I think it is important in the foundation of relationships” to be known to be for honesty is a really great noun.
“Ialways try to do my best at everything”Jessica Garcia’s legacy she wants to be remembered for.
Meeting Jessica’s family, parents, Roberto and Maria, little Sis Vanessa and brother Robert (Jessica’s siblings are both so cute!), and Grandmother Socorro Garcia, it was very plain everyone for Jessica they all adore.
The Weinert House sponsored Jessica, her formal was an elegant ruffled teal, she sang “Heaven”, she could sing before she could talk!
Hexcel sponsored Jennifer Rinehart, was very confident about her legacy “To be a driven and charismatic individual to make a difference in the film industry”, after Jennifer’s talent she sure walked the walk!
Jennifer performed “Taylor the Latte Boy”, I can see why representing Seguin High School she won first for BPA.
You could hear the cheers at the end of her clever performance, parents Larry and Marie Rinehart, chimed in, Jennifer’s formal, hot pink with a corset bodice was so pretty, youth and elegance it did convey.
Now here is a real feat, Chelsea Hickey danced like a chicken to Tina Turner’s “Shake your tail feathers”, combining comedy and grace!
Chelsea’s sponsors, Bloomer’s Floral and Bridal and Suzi Hughson’s School of Dance, she really showed her talent well, both sponsors would quickly agree.
Afterwards, Craig and Kassie Hickey, told me that Chelsea thoroughly enjoyed the experience, she always wants to be involved, Grandmother Kay Hickey concurred, Chelsea’s legacy, teaching like her Mom she wants to be.
Cassie Beasley in her legacy expression gave her Mom the highest compliment “I am the girl people go to that will always listen, like my Mom”, parents Bryan and Angela Beasley that must have thrilled your hearts.
Talent, yes quite obvious, a strong voice and stage presence as she sang “I don’t want to show off”, she’s been singing since age 8, a true lover of musical arts.
Cassie’s formal a royal blue with a single jeweled strap, sponsors Seguin Auto Parts and CMC Steel Group, your sponsorship dollars were well represented.
Bianca Trigo played Taps on the trumpet, not a sound was heard from the crowd during her performance, Bianca’s legacy...”Wisdom, saying or writing something that the younger generation can quote” Bianca said.
Bianca’s blue jeweled formal was ethereal, parents Cristela Trigo and Mario Trigo, as well as sponsor Tier One Dental had a memorable night.
“My legacy to be a dependable and reliable person, who uses my talent for people in need” said Lauren Bouquet, a very worthy plight.
Lauren’s formal was teal with a jeweled empire waist and gossamer overlay, a wonderful representative for sponsor Guadalupe Regional Medical Center.
Lauren played the piano and sang John Lennon’s “Imagine”, her parents Rocky and Melanie Bouquet must have been beaming, as they have been her mentors.
This contestant has been in love with Broadway since age 6, Grayson Gilcrease, sang and acted “What is this feeling” from Wicked.
Grayson’s legacy fit right in with her talent “Creativity, for what would the world be without creativity” not just a statement it is how Grayson has lived.
Mom and Dad, Dr. Greg and Laurie Gilcrease, were on hand to support their talented daughter, and also sponsored her, Gilcrease Dental, her formal a teal print halter back with a sequined empire waist.
Stevie Bolton, tumbled and rhymed, she reminded me of myself (the rhyming of course!) to Dr. Seuss’s “Oh The Places you’ll go”, it was so unique and cute, she never stopped for a second it was very fast paced.
“Fun Loving and selfless, be an awesome person”, Stevie’s legacy a good one for her parents, Sheila Bolton and Wade Bolton to know.
Stevie decked out in a bright yellow glittery gown was sponsored by Amy and Cathy’s Takeout and Master’s Electric, you picked a great girl to sponsor! “Oh the places she will go!”
Before I get to the awards you should know that this once in a lifetime experience for these High School girls would not be possible without volunteers, in other words they do this selflessly.
Jenna Stollewerk Beason (6 years service) and Toni Winters (20 years service) have been there every step of the way, encouraging each girl from beginning to end, Toni and Jenna without you Junior Miss in Guadalupe County would not even be.
Amanda Gold, owner of Suzi Hughson’s School of Dance has given her time, talent and studio for the Junior Miss cause, there are so many more that should be mentioned,I am simply out of space.
So I have to move on to get to the finalist in this Scholarship race.
Stevie Bolton was awarded “The Spirit of Junior Miss”, “Fitness Winner” & “Talent” Way to go!
Jennifer Rinehart won “Self Expression” and Grayson Gilcrease won the “Scholastic Award”,
Grayson is a very intelligent girl, don’t you know.
Second Runner Up, Chelsea Hickey, 1st Runner Up Jennifer Rinehart and, drum roll please...
2010 - 2011 Guadalupe County Junior Miss Lauren Bouquet.
Junior Miss was a grand experience as both a reporter and a Mom. We are very fortunate to have such talent and determination in tomorrow’s women, I was simply blown away!
Being part of our Community is one of the many joys of my poetic experience.
Where I’ll be, you’ll never know, it even keeps me in suspense.
